Benefits of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery – What Patients Should Know

Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) offers many advantages over traditional open surgery.  Traditional spine surgeries involve a large incision and a long recovery period.  Many patients experienced significant pain, and there was a greater risk of infection.  Newer technologies allow some spinal surgeries to now be performed as minimally invasive procedures.  This offers patients a number of exciting benefits.

Minimally invasive surgery involves one or more small incisions through which the surgeon inserts a small tube, or endoscope.  Surgeons are able to view the procedure on a computer monitor.  Many procedures are performed in outpatient facilities, with patients able to return home the same day.

There are several spine surgeries that are now appropriate for minimally invasive procedures.  The following are some benefits for the patient.

Less Anesthesia Needed

In general, less anesthesia is required for minimally invasive surgery than open surgery.  Procedures may be performed under local or regional anesthesia, or with minimal sedation.  Patients may feel drowsy but are still responsive.  Using less anesthesia can mean fewer side effects.  Under general anesthesia, the patient may experience more drowsiness, headache, or nausea.

Less Tissue Damage

Incisions in open surgery are large, while incisions in minimally invasive surgery are small.  Surgeons are often able to avoid cutting through muscles or using muscle retraction.  There is less trauma to surrounding soft tissue, which means less post-operative pain for the patient and a faster recovery.  Patients are often able to go home the same day, and wounds heal more quickly with less scarring.

Very Little Blood Loss

Smaller incisions lead to less blood loss.  Physicians can use electrocautery or lasers to seal blood vessels to stop bleeding and minimize tissue damage.

Faster Recovery

A faster recovery is one of the biggest advantages of minimally invasive spine surgery.  Patients are often able to return to their regular activities in just weeks instead of months.  They will require less pain medication during their recuperation.  The lower risk of complications with minimally invasive spine surgery allows for a smoother patient recovery.
