Strengthening Core Muscles to Relieve Low Back Pain
Strengthening Core Muscles to Relieve Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a common medical complaint.  It’s estimated that 75%-80% of adults will suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives.  According to the National Institutes of Health, low back pain is a leading cause of lost productivity and medical expenditures.  The percentage of adults with low back pain increases with age.

Treatments for Low Back Pain

Medical care for low back pain, regardless of cause, generally begins with conservative treatments.  These treatments can range from hot and cold therapy, light stretching, to over-the-counter pain medications and anti-inflammatory drugs.  Conservative recommendations from a physician may include prescription medications such as muscle relaxers and stronger pain relievers.  Steroid injections may be recommended for severe or chronic pain.  The patient may be referred for physical therapy.

The majority of people with low back pain will not need back surgery.  The good news is that many low back conditions will get better within three months with conservative treatments.

Strengthening core muscles can relieve low back pain.

Physical therapy is considered a conservative treatment that can help relieve pain and strengthen the core muscles.  Core muscles include much more than the front abdominals.  Other muscles that support the core include the obliques along the sides, the transverse abdominal which wraps around the front of the body, the diaphragm, hip flexors, gluteal muscles, muscles of the pelvic floor, and muscles in the back along the spine and between the spinal vertebrae.  All of these muscle groups help supply stability to the spine, maintain proper alignment and posture, share load distribution, and prevent hyperextension and hyperflexion.

What exercises do physical therapists recommend to strengthen the core muscles?

Confident young Caucasian female physical therapist uses resistance band to help a senior female patient. The patient is lying on the table with her foot in the band. She is raising her leg off of the table.

Some exercises a physical therapist may recommend to strengthen core muscles can include variations of the plank, the bird dog, bridges, lower trunk rotations, and the single leg abdominal press.  In addition, there are core strengthening exercises that can be performed with resistance bands or a yoga ball.

The physical therapist will evaluate the patient and test and observe muscle strength, range of motion, coordination, balance, posture, and joint mobility.  A personalized treatment plan will be developed for the patient.  The plan should include realistic goals.

It’s important to follow the plan and perform the exercises correctly to avoid further injury.  The physical therapist will continue to evaluate patient progress and make modifications to address the patient’s needs.
